Disney On Ice

Disney On Ice

What is your earliest memory?  I have often tried to think back as hard as I can to recall the first image embedded in my mind.  It is a mix between a pinocchio puppet show when I was about 3 that scared the living daylights out of me and Sesame Street performance.  I couldnt tell you wether it was on roller skates (it was the 80’s after all) or in a theatre I just remember being in awe of that giant yellow bird.

Yet for some reason we have never done the whole “show” thing with our Pigeon Pair.  Partly because the ticket prices are usually staggering, but mostly becaue a show hasnt come along that they would BOTH enjoy.

Master O’s first show was Circque Du Soleil “Ovo” last year.  It was truly an experience he will remember for the rest of his life.  He was aged 5 at at the time and it was the perfect age for him to be able to sit still the whole performance and soak up all the awe inspiring magic.
Last week “Disney On Ice” came to town.  The Princesses and Heroes performance was travelling Australia and stopping for the weekend in Brisbane.   A local PR company wanted to know if I would be interested in taking my family.  Maybe this would be our chance? A show with BOTH Princesses and Heroes AND we could go for free.

WE’LL BE IN THAT!

To be honest I had no idea what to expect would a 3 year old be interested in sitting still for a few hours?  Would a 6 year old boy be dismayyed at the number of Princesses?  Would this be worth the hour long drive?

YES, YES and YES.  Disney sure know what they are doing.  Yes the merchandise was overpriced, but the food relatively affordable.  The stage was set in a way that any seat in the house had a great view.  The backdrops and scene changes were incerdible and the lighting, music and costumes brilliant.  Yes there were a lot of girls dressed up as Princesses but Little Miss A had her eyes hooked on the stage for EVERY minute!

Waiting for the show to start! Excited Much?

With the help of Tinkerbell, Minnie and Mickey and Goofy the “Princess” stories were woven together around the theme of wishes coming true.  ALL the Diney Princesses were covered, including newly added Rapunzel and seldom seen Tiana from the Frog Prince.  Master O’s favourite was Sleeping Beauty in which a gigantic Dragon took to the ice breathing FIRE! The look on Little Miss A’s face when Cinderella entered in her carriage was priceless.  She believed in the magic.  To her it was all real.  She was witnessing a magical figment of her imagination come to life as the princess left her sparkling carriage to dance with the handsome prince. I have never seen her so in awe. Oh and Tinkerbell had REAL fairy dust! Yep that moment did it for me, I’m hooked!

SOME TIPS;

  1. You can take your own food.  We took some snacks and splurged on some drinks while we were there.
  2. Their is an intermission but it is only about 10 minutes long.  RUN to the toilets as the queue is huge! We managed to go to the toilets, get Mummy a coffee and a drink top up for the kids.
  3. Wear your Princess costume (the kids I mean) we wished we had of let Little Miss A dress up but we hd no idea that was what you do at these things!
  4. Familiarise yourself with ALL the princesses.  I was in shock at how much Little Miss A knew about each princess I really need to brush up on my knowledge!
  5. Cameras are welcome, it is dark inside and hard to get shots of the show but their are plenty of other awesome photo opportunities.

Would I go again? DEFINTIELY.  Since going I have heard many people say that Disney On Ice is a yearly tradition.  They collect the programs, go with friends and make a day of it.  GREAT IDEA!  We hope to make this an annual “Girls Day Out”
To be honest although this show had “heroes” and some action scenes it was targeted a little more at girls.  Girls aged from 2-10 would LOVE IT!  We saw whole groups of little girls that had gone together, some even celebrating their birthday there. However, I think Master O aged 6 was getting close to the interest age cut off.  Smaller boys perharps up to age 5/6 will love it but I think beyond that our years of Master O wanting to see a Disney Ice show are numbered.

Overall this was one of those occasions you know as a family, you will always treasure.  A day filled with moments I know they will remember and perhaps form part of Little Miss A’s earliest memories.  An entertaining excursion filled with joy, hope, dreams, wishes, magic and lots of fairy dust.

DISCLOSURE:  We were gifted Tickets to the Disney On Ice show in exchange for our honest evaluation and review of the show.
