Tips From The Teacher ~ School Labels

Tips From The Teacher ~ School Labels

As a teacher, a mother and a blogger I get asked a lot of questions about Back To School stuff.   One of the most common questions is about Labels!!!!  So here are my top tips on what to buy, where to stick it, and everything school labels.

1. LABEL EVERYTHING!  When I say everything, I mean EVERYTHING!  To help with this I create one MEGA school list.  In it it has everything, on the one sheet that my kids will need for school.  Text books, Stationary, Uniforms, Shoes, Library Bags, Lunch Boxes, EVERYTHING.

You can see in the right hand colum I have a whole column dedicated to Labels!  I have the Labels divided into 5 Categories.

1. Clothing – Include Hats, Shorts, Shirts, Dresses, Socks, Ties, Garters, Art Smocks, Aprons, Underwear, Singlets and Swimwear. (especially if they will be going to school swimming lessons!)  Remember you will need two labels for each pair of socks!

2. Shoes – Sports and Formal/Dress (Their are specific lables created for shoes with a clever clear overlay that helps them stick inside, a clever tip I have use with little ones is to stick two different coloured labels in shoes, maybe Red for Right and Lime for Left to help them distinguish the “right” foot for the shoe! )

3. Small or Mini – Lead Pencils, Coloured Pencils, Crayons, Textas, Erasers, Sharpeners, Glue Sticks, Rulers, Scissors.

4. Books – Text Books, Exercise books, Scrap Books, Clipboard Folders, Plastic Folders, Binders.

5. Bags. – School Bag, Lunch Bag, Library Bag, Homework bag, Swimming Bag

6. General  Name Labels – Lunch Box, Lunch Containers (and Lids) Drink Bottles, Tissue Boxes.

Yep that is A LOT OF LABELS!!!  These categories are sorted according to the type of label they require.

Clothes require “Stick On” or “Iron On Labels” that are specific for clothing.  This way they won’t come off in the wash.  and Yes I said label underwear.  Your child will thank you when it is Swimming day and the teacher can DISCRETELY return the underwear found on the toilet floor to the rightful owner.

Mini Labels are the best size for all those little bits and pieces including pencils and crayons. They are great wrapped around the handle of a pair of scissors and perfect for glue sticks.

General Name Labels should be of good quality and even dishwasher safe as they will go on your lunch boxes and drink bottles.

2. USER BE THE CHOOSER! It will be your child who needs to recognise the label so let them select their own.  We choose one “Theme” a year.  So even if they can’t read their name yet they know the “Robot” labels are on their items.  This also puts a bit of fun into Back To School when so many items now are prescribed by the school. It’s nice to choose something of your own!

3. USE THE FULL NAME.  Oh boy have I learnt this one the hard way when you have five Jack’s in the class or even two Lily. R’s.  Please put your child’s first and last name on the label.  You are doing the teacher and your child a favour! Where possible especially on bag tags also include a mobile number.

4. GO FOR QUALITY AND QUANTITY.  These labels need to last at least a year of rough and tumble, wear and tear.  They need to be good quality.  I have ordered home made labels off ebay in the past and they just don’t go the distance.  You will also need a LOT of labels so look for Value Packs that combine different types of labels for a discounted price or even throw something of added value like a bag tag. Always order the largest quantity, after all it’s not like your child’s name is going to change! Items will pop up during the year and its always handy to have some extras.

So what labels do I use?
I have found buying all my labels in the one place saves time and money.  So each year for Back To School I use “Stuck On You“.  They have a great range of designs (I particulary love the Designer Range) all the sizes I need, and I save money by buying Bundled Value Packs.

This year we got Classic Mini Labels (In Bambini with a shark icon)
and Designer Name Labels and Iron on Clothing Labels (in The Sea and Sky Design)
and I just may have snuck some in for Little Miss A because I couldnt resist the “Sweetie Pie” designs!
She has given each one of them a name!
